US Citizens Visiting Tanzania

US citizens must apply for a Multiple Entry visa to visit Tanzania at a cost of $100. Single entry visas are not available for American passport holders. Apply online through the e-Visa portal or obtain a visa on arrival. The multiple entry visa is valid for 12 months.

Tanzanians living outside Washington DC can access some services by mail. Send documents by USPS Priority Mail or FedEx with a prepaid return envelope. Contact the embassy by email first to confirm which services are available by mail and what documents to include.

Tanzania applies the principle of reciprocity. Since the US charges Tanzanians $185 for a US visa, Tanzania charges Americans a higher fee ($100 for a mandatory multiple entry visa) compared to most other nationalities ($50 single entry). This is standard diplomatic practice.

Tanzania has a Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, but it does not provide consular services to the public. All consular services (passports, notarial, etc.) are handled by the embassy in Washington DC. Honorary consulates in some cities may offer limited assistance.
