Nyerere National Park (Selous) Guide 2026

Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, is one of the largest protected areas in Africa at over 30,000 km² - larger than Switzerland. Located in southern Tanzania along the mighty Rufiji River, it offers a wilder, more remote safari experience than the northern circuit. Here you can do boat safaris, walking safaris, and witness some of the best African wild dog sightings on the continent.

Why Nyerere: Boat safaris on the Rufiji River (unavailable in Serengeti/Ngorongoro), walking safaris with armed rangers, one of Africa's largest wild dog populations, far fewer tourists, and just 45 minutes by air from Dar es Salaam.

Wildlife & Safari Activities

African Wild Dogs

Nyerere is one of the best places in Africa to see endangered African wild dogs (also called painted dogs). The park has one of the continent's largest populations. Packs of 15-30 dogs are regularly sighted, and you may witness their cooperative hunting behaviour - one of nature's most thrilling spectacles. Best sighting months: June-October (dry season).

Boat Safaris on the Rufiji River

This is Nyerere's signature experience - something you cannot do in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Glide along the Rufiji River at eye level with enormous hippo pods (some of the largest concentrations in Africa), Nile crocodiles (up to 5m), elephants drinking and bathing, and exceptional waterbirds. Morning and late afternoon boat trips are best. Duration: 2-3 hours.

Walking Safaris

Multi-day or half-day walking safaris with armed TANAPA rangers offer a raw wilderness experience. Walk through bush, track animals on foot, learn about plants and smaller creatures. This is how safari was originally experienced. Available from most lodges. Requires reasonable fitness.

Game Drives

Traditional game drives cover the northern sector's network of tracks. Large elephant herds (Nyerere has one of Africa's biggest populations), lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, and sable antelope. Leopards are present but elusive. Black rhino exist in tiny numbers in remote areas.

Fishing

Catch-and-release fishing safaris on the Rufiji River. Tiger fish, vundu catfish (up to 50 kg), and tilapia. Full-day fishing trip: $150-250. Available from several lodges. Best fishing: September-November.

FAQ

In 2019, the northern sector of the Selous Game Reserve was reclassified as Nyerere National Park, named after Tanzania's founding president Julius Nyerere. This sector (approximately 30,000 km²) is where all tourist activities take place. The southern sector remains the Selous Game Reserve and is designated for hunting concessions and has no tourist facilities. The upgrade to national park status brought stronger protection and prohibition of hunting within the park boundaries.

Nyerere and Serengeti offer different safari experiences. Nyerere is closer to Dar (45 min flight vs. 3+ hours for Serengeti), has boat safaris and walking safaris (not available in Serengeti), far fewer tourists, and better wild dog sightings. The Serengeti has the Great Migration, more open plains, bigger predator populations, and more accommodation options at every budget level. If you want a quiet, diverse safari experience with water-based activities, choose Nyerere. If you want classic African plains and the migration, choose Serengeti.

Day trips are possible but not ideal. Some operators offer fly-in day safaris from Dar (depart 7 AM, return 5 PM) that include a boat safari and game drive. Cost: $500-700 per person. However, a 2-3 night stay is strongly recommended to fully experience the park, especially the dawn boat safaris and walking safaris that day-trippers miss. The park is at its best in the early morning and late afternoon.
