Nyerere National Park (Selous) 2026

Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, is one of the largest protected areas in Africa at over 30,000 km². Located in southern Tanzania along the Rufiji River, it offers a wilder, more remote safari experience with boat safaris, walking safaris, and some of the continent's best wild dog sightings.

Wildlife & Activities

  • African Wild Dogs: One of Africa's best locations for endangered wild dogs. Packs regularly seen hunting.
  • Boat Safaris: Unique Rufiji River boat trips to see hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and waterbirds up close. Not available in northern parks.
  • Walking Safaris: Multi-day walking safaris with armed rangers - a true wilderness experience.
  • Big Five: Elephants, lions, buffalo present in large numbers. Leopard and black rhino also present.
  • Rufiji River: The park's lifeblood. Spectacular landscapes with ox-bow lakes, channels, and flood plains.
  • Fishing: Catch-and-release fishing safaris on the Rufiji (tiger fish, catfish).

Getting There

  • By Air: Daily flights from Dar es Salaam (45 minutes) to airstrips within the park. Coastal Aviation, Safari Airlink operate scheduled services.
  • By Road: 6-8 hours from Dar es Salaam (350 km). Roads can be challenging in wet season.
  • Best Time: June-November (dry season). Park largely inaccessible December-May due to flooding.

FAQ

In 2019, the northern sector of the Selous Game Reserve was reclassified as Nyerere National Park (named after Tanzania's first president). The southern sector remains the Selous Game Reserve. Tourist activities take place in Nyerere National Park. The name change reflects upgraded protection status.
