Mafia Island Guide 2026

Mafia Island is Tanzania's undiscovered paradise - a quiet, uncrowded island with some of the best diving and snorkelling in East Africa. Located 120 km south of Dar es Salaam, the Mafia Island Marine Park protects pristine coral reefs, and from October to March, whale sharks gather in its waters for one of the world's great marine wildlife encounters. Unlike Zanzibar, Mafia remains blissfully untouched by mass tourism.

Best For: Serious divers and snorkellers, whale shark encounters (Oct-Mar), couples seeking a quiet island retreat, marine biology enthusiasts, and travellers who want an authentic island experience away from crowds.

Diving & Marine Life

Mafia Island Marine Park was established in 1995 and covers 822 km² of protected ocean, reefs, and mangroves. The marine life here is exceptional:

  • Whale Sharks: October to March is whale shark season. These gentle giants (up to 12m long) gather in the warm plankton-rich waters off Mafia. Snorkel alongside them in shallow water. Sightings are almost guaranteed during peak season (Nov-Feb). Cost: $70-100 per trip including boat, guide, and equipment.
  • Coral Reefs: Over 50 dive sites within the marine park. Pristine hard and soft corals with visibility of 20-30m. The reefs here have not suffered the bleaching events seen elsewhere in the Indian Ocean.
  • Marine Life: 400+ fish species, green and hawksbill sea turtles (nesting season: Jun-Sep), octopus, nudibranchs, reef sharks (white-tip and black-tip), giant groupers, barracuda, and seasonal manta rays.
  • Dive Sites: Kinasi Wall (dramatic wall dive, 30m+), Chole Bay (easy reef dives), Dindini North (pelagic fish), Mange Reef (pristine corals), and Juani Island (turtle nesting).
  • Dive Centres: Mafia Island Diving (at Butiama Beach), Big Blu (at Chole Mjini), and lodge-based dive operations. All offer PADI courses from Open Water to Divemaster. Single dive: $50-65. 2-tank dive: $100-130. PADI Open Water course: $500-600.

Things to Do (Besides Diving)

  • Chole Island: Just across Chole Bay, this small island has ruins of a 19th-century Arab trading settlement, a bat colony in giant baobab trees, and the treehouse lodge Chole Mjini. Walk the island in 2 hours. Boat trip: $20-30.
  • Juani Island: Ancient ruins (Kua ruins, 12th-15th century), sea turtle nesting beaches, and pristine snorkelling. Half-day trip: $40-60.
  • Kitutia Reef: An exposed reef flat accessible at low tide, perfect for walking and finding marine creatures in rock pools. Bring reef shoes.
  • Mangrove Kayaking: Paddle through Mafia's extensive mangrove forests. See kingfishers, herons, crabs, and juvenile fish. Half-day: $30-50.
  • Village Walks: Visit Kilindoni town (the main settlement) and fishing villages. See dhow building, coconut processing, and daily island life. Very friendly local community.
  • Deep-Sea Fishing: Sailfish, marlin, tuna, barracuda, and wahoo in the deeper waters beyond the reef. Full-day trip: $400-600 for the boat.
  • Beach Relaxation: Utende Beach, Butiama Beach, and Ras Mbisi offer white sand and calm turquoise waters with almost no other visitors.

FAQ

The whale shark season on Mafia Island runs from October to March, with peak sightings from November to February. During this period, sightings are almost guaranteed on any given trip. The whale sharks gather to feed on plankton in the warm shallow waters. You snorkel alongside them (no diving needed). Encounters are managed responsibly with a maximum number of snorkellers per whale shark.

Mafia is for those seeking a quiet, nature-focused experience. It has far better diving and snorkelling than Zanzibar, whale shark encounters (which Zanzibar does not offer), and virtually no crowds. However, Zanzibar has more accommodation options, nightlife, cultural attractions (Stone Town), better shopping, and easier access. Mafia is harder to reach, has fewer facilities, and is more expensive per night. Choose Mafia for diving and marine life; choose Zanzibar for a broader beach holiday experience.

Not at all. Snorkelling on Mafia is excellent and accessible to everyone. The whale shark encounters are done while snorkelling (not diving). Chole Bay has shallow reefs perfect for snorkelling. Non-diving activities include kayaking, island hopping, beach relaxation, village walks, and fishing. Many visitors come purely for the whale sharks and beach experience without ever diving.
