European Access for Tanzanian Passport 2026

Europe is predominantly visa-required territory for Tanzanian passport holders. The 29 Schengen Area countries and the UK all require advance visa applications. However, a small number of European countries and territories offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to Tanzanians.

Schengen Visa: For access to the 29 Schengen countries (most of Western and Central Europe), see our Schengen Visa Guide. A single visa covers all member states.

Tips for Tanzanians Travelling to Europe

  • Start with easier destinations: Build travel history by visiting visa-free or easier-to-obtain-visa countries first (Kosovo, Georgia, Turkey). This strengthens future Schengen applications.
  • Apply early: Schengen and UK visa applications should be submitted 6-8 weeks before travel. During summer (June-August), processing times increase.
  • Transit visas: If connecting through a European airport, check whether you need a transit visa. Schengen transit visas are required for Tanzanians even when not leaving the airport at some airports.
  • Travel insurance: Required for Schengen visa applications (minimum EUR 30,000 coverage). Recommended for all European travel.
  • Return tickets: Always have proof of return or onward travel. Airlines may deny boarding without it.
