Ngorongoro Crater Guide 2026
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera and one of Africa's most spectacular wildlife destinations. This 260 km² crater floor hosts approximately 25,000 animals including the Big Five, making it one of the best places in Tanzania for a single-day safari.

Big Five
- Lion: ~60 lions resident in the crater. Very high sighting probability.

Best Time to Visit
- June-October (Dry Season): Best for general game viewing. Vegetation is shorter, animals gather at water sources. Busiest period.

- March-May: Long rains. Crater can be misty/muddy but lush and green. Fewer tourists, lower prices.
- November: Short rains begin. Still good game viewing, transitional period.
Temperature: The crater rim (2,286m) is cool - bring warm layers for mornings (5-10°C). Crater floor is warmer (15-25°C).
Getting There
- From Arusha: 3-4 hours by road (180 km). Most safaris depart from Arusha.
- From Serengeti: Often combined in a 3-5 day Northern Circuit safari.
- By Air: Charter flights to Lake Manyara airstrip, then 1.5 hour drive to the crater.
- Tour Operators: Must enter with a registered tour operator or licensed guide. No self-drive on the crater floor.
