Wildlife Highlights

  • Tree-Climbing Lions: Lake Manyara's most famous residents. Lions drape themselves on branches of mahogany and sausage trees, especially during the dry season. Best spotted in the southern part of the park.
  • Flamingos: When conditions are right, hundreds of thousands of lesser flamingos turn the alkaline lake pink. Best months: November-May.
  • Elephants: Large herds of 50+ elephants roam the groundwater forest. Very photogenic with dense green backdrop.
  • Hippos: Hippo pools near the hot springs in the southern section.
  • Baboons: Massive troops (100+) of olive baboons along the escarpment. Fascinating social behaviour.
  • Birds: 400+ species including pelicans, storks, cormorants, eagles, and bee-eaters. One of Africa's premier birding destinations.
  • Blue Monkeys: Found in the groundwater forest - unique to this park on the Northern Circuit.

Best Time to Visit

  • June-October: Dry season. Best for tree-climbing lions and general game viewing. Animals concentrate near water.
  • November-February: Short rains bring flamingos and migratory birds. Lush green scenery.
  • March-May: Long rains. Park can be muddy but dramatically beautiful. Fewer visitors.

FAQ

A half-day game drive (4-5 hours) covers the main highlights. Many safari itineraries include Lake Manyara as a morning or afternoon stop between Arusha and Ngorongoro/Serengeti. Serious birders and photographers should allow a full day.

Not guaranteed - these are wild animals. Sightings are more common during the dry season (June-October) when lions seek cool shade in trees. Your guide's local knowledge significantly improves chances. Even without lions in trees, the park offers excellent wildlife viewing.
