Arusha City Guide 2026

Known as the 'Safari Capital of Tanzania', Arusha is the gateway to the Northern Circuit parks - Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Mount Kilimanjaro. This vibrant, cosmopolitan city sits at the foot of Mount Meru (4,566m) and offers its own rich set of attractions: cultural tourism with Maasai and Wa-arusha communities, coffee plantations, the unique Tanzanite gemstone market, and excellent accommodation at every budget level.

Safari Planning: Most Northern Circuit safaris start and end in Arusha. Arrive a day early to acclimatise, meet your tour operator, and explore the city. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is 46 km east of Arusha; Arusha Airport (ARK) serves small charter flights.

Top Attractions

Arusha National Park

Just 25 km from the city centre, this compact park (552 km²) packs incredible diversity into a small area. Mount Meru dominates the skyline. The Momella Lakes attract thousands of flamingos and other waterbirds. Walking safaris, canoeing on the lakes, and game drives offer close encounters with giraffes, buffalo, black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, waterbuck, and bushbuck. No lions or elephants (occasionally passing through). Entry: $45/adult (non-resident), TSh 15,000 (EA resident). Half-day or full-day visits work well.

Mount Meru

Africa's 5th highest peak at 4,566m. A rewarding 3-4 day trek through rainforest (with colobus monkeys), moorland, and alpine desert to the dramatic Socialist Peak. Meru is an excellent acclimatisation trek before Kilimanjaro and is stunning in its own right. The summit ridge walks along a knife-edge crater rim with views of Kilimanjaro at sunrise. Permits: $70/day. Guide and porter: $50-80/day. Total trek cost: $500-800 with a tour operator.

Maasai Markets

Arusha's twice-weekly markets (Wednesday and Saturday, near the clock tower) are the best places to buy authentic Maasai beadwork, Tingatinga paintings, ebony carvings, kangas, batik fabrics, and tanzanite jewellery. Bargaining is expected - start at 30-40% of the asking price. The Saturday market is larger and more vibrant.

Cultural Tourism

Community-based tourism programmes around Arusha offer genuine cultural experiences:

  • Maasai Village Visits: Visit a traditional boma (homestead), learn about Maasai traditions, cattle culture, and warrior training. Half-day: $30-50.
  • Wa-arusha Heritage: The Wa-arusha (Meru) people around Mount Meru offer village walks, traditional cooking, and farming experiences. Full-day: $40-60.
  • Coffee Plantation Tours: Arusha region produces some of Tanzania's finest Arabica coffee. Visit farms on the slopes of Mount Meru, see processing from cherry to cup, and taste freshly roasted single-origin coffee. Half-day: $25-40.

Tanzanite Experience

Tanzanite is found only in one place on earth: the Merelani Hills near Arusha. The Tanzanite Experience museum explains the geology, mining process, and grading of this unique blue-violet gemstone. Free entry. You can purchase certified tanzanite from affiliated dealers. Prices are significantly lower than overseas.

Other Attractions

  • Shanga River House: Craft workshop employing people with disabilities. Beautiful handmade jewellery, glasswork, and textiles. Garden restaurant with excellent lunch.
  • Meserani Snake Park: Educational centre with snakes, reptiles, and a Maasai cultural museum. Good for families. Entry: TSh 15,000.
  • Arusha Declaration Museum: Historical museum about Tanzania's independence and the Arusha Declaration. Near the clock tower.
  • Lake Duluti: Volcanic crater lake 13 km from Arusha. Canoeing, birdwatching, and walking around the forested rim. Half-day: $20-30.

FAQ

1-2 days in Arusha itself is ideal. Use the first day to explore the city (markets, cultural tourism, Tanzanite Experience) and the second for Arusha National Park or a coffee tour. If climbing Mount Meru, add 3-4 days. Most visitors use Arusha as a base before and after their Northern Circuit safari, spending 1 night on arrival and 1 night on return before flying out.

Absolutely. Mount Meru (4,566m) is an excellent acclimatisation trek for Kilimanjaro (5,895m). The 3-4 day trek takes you through diverse ecosystems, the summit crater rim is spectacular, and you get Kilimanjaro views at sunrise. It also costs a fraction of a Kilimanjaro climb ($500-800 vs. $2,000-5,000). Many climbers who skip Meru acclimatisation struggle with altitude on Kilimanjaro.

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the main airport, located 46 km east of Arusha. It receives international flights from Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Amsterdam (KLM), and Doha (Qatar Airways), plus domestic flights from Dar es Salaam. Transfer to Arusha city takes 45-60 minutes ($40-60 by taxi, or arrange hotel pickup). Arusha Airport (ARK) is a small airstrip closer to town, used for charter flights and small aircraft to parks.
