Photography Guide to Tanzania 2026

Tanzania is a photographer's paradise of superlatives — the Serengeti Migration, Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the spice-scented alleys of Zanzibar's Stone Town. From the vast savannah plains to coral reefs, Tanzania offers some of the most spectacular photographic subjects on Earth.

Camera Gear Recommendations

Serengeti / Safari Kit

  • Primary telephoto: 100-400mm or 200-600mm. The Serengeti's open plains require long reach for distant herds and river crossings
  • Fast zoom: 70-200mm f/2.8 for dawn/dusk big cat photography. Lions and leopards are most active in low light
  • Wide zoom: 16-35mm or 24-70mm for Ngorongoro Crater panoramas and Serengeti landscape shots
  • Bean bag: Essential for vehicle-based shooting. Rest on the pop-up roof hatch

Zanzibar / Kilimanjaro Kit

  • Street lens: 35mm f/1.4 or 24-70mm for Stone Town's narrow alleys and carved doors
  • Underwater: GoPro or waterproof housing for snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll. Whale shark shots need a wide-angle underwater lens
  • Kilimanjaro: Lightweight mirrorless with 24-70mm. Weight matters at altitude. Batteries drain fast in cold — keep them warm in your pockets

Essential Accessories

  • Batteries: 4+ batteries. Charging on safari can be limited (some camps use solar only)
  • Memory: 3 x 128GB+ cards minimum for a safari week
  • Dust protection: Serengeti dust is relentless. Camera rain covers double as dust covers. Blower and lens cloths are essential
  • Portable drive: Backup images nightly. An SSD drive (1TB) is lighter than HDD

Drone Laws in Tanzania

Drones are strictly regulated in Tanzania. NO drone photography in national parks.
RequirementDetails
PermitTCAA (Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority) permit required for all drone operations
National ParksSTRICTLY PROHIBITED. No drones in Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, or any TANAPA-managed park
EnforcementConfiscation of drone + potential fine or arrest. Park rangers actively enforce this
ZanzibarSeparate permit may be required from Zanzibar authorities. Enforcement varies
ImportDeclare drones at customs. Undeclared drones may be confiscated on arrival
CostPermit fees vary — apply through TCAA

Strong recommendation: Leave your drone at home for Tanzania safari trips. The risk of confiscation is real and the permit process is difficult. For Zanzibar, the situation is slightly more relaxed, but always carry documentation. Drone footage of Zanzibar's coastline is beautiful — but ensure you have proper permits.

Best Light Conditions

TimeDetailsBest For
6:00-6:30amSunrise, warm golden lightSerengeti sunrises, balloon rides, Kilimanjaro
6:30-8:00amDirectional warm lightWildlife portraits, action, Ngorongoro Crater descent
8:00am-4:00pmHarsh overhead lightRest period. Underwater photography in Zanzibar is good midday
4:00-6:00pmGolden side lightSavannah landscapes, baobab trees, Stone Town alleys

Serengeti special: The Serengeti's flat, open plains create spectacular 360-degree sunrises and sunsets. Storm clouds on the horizon at sunset create the most dramatic images.

Street Photography — Zanzibar & Maasai

Stone Town, Zanzibar

  • Carved doors: Over 560 original carved doors remain in Stone Town — each tells a story. Best shot in morning side light
  • Darajani Market: Spice vendors, fishmongers, fruit sellers. Arrive early (7-8am) for the fish auction
  • Children: Stone Town children are often happy to be photographed and will pose enthusiastically. Offer to show them the image
  • Privacy: Some women in Zanzibar's Muslim areas do not want to be photographed. Always ask. "Naomba picha?" (Swahili: May I take a photo?)

Maasai Communities

  • Ngorongoro Maasai: Maasai live around the crater rim. Cultural village visits include photography. Fees apply (TSh15,000-30,000)
  • Consent: Always negotiate photography permission before raising your camera. Maasai warriors in traditional dress may request TSh5,000-10,000

Instagram-Worthy Spots

  1. Serengeti hot air balloon sunrise — floating over the migration
  2. Ngorongoro Crater rim viewpoint — crater floor panorama
  3. Zanzibar dhow sunset — traditional boat silhouetted against orange sky
  4. Kilimanjaro summit sunrise — above the clouds, glaciers, Uhuru Peak sign
  5. Stone Town carved door — ornate Arab/Indian doorway with brass studs
  6. Tarangire baobab elephant — elephant walking past massive baobab tree
  7. Paje Beach — kitesurfers, turquoise water, white sand
  8. The Rock Restaurant, Zanzibar — restaurant on a rock in the ocean

Protecting Your Gear

  • Serengeti dust: Possibly the dustiest safari environment in Africa. Camera covers are essential between sightings. Clean sensors every evening if possible
  • Zanzibar humidity/salt: High humidity and sea spray. Use silica gel sachets. Wipe gear after beach shoots. Keep cameras in sealed bags on boat trips
  • Kilimanjaro altitude: Batteries drain fast in cold. Keep spare batteries in inner pockets (body warmth). LCD screens respond slowly in freezing temps
  • Bush plane limits: Most internal flights (Arusha to Serengeti, Dar to Selous) are on small Cessna/Caravan aircraft. Luggage limit: 15kg in soft bag only. Plan camera gear accordingly
  • Insurance: Get specialist camera insurance. Safari vehicles on rough roads + dust + humidity = high risk for equipment damage
Quick Tips
  • Drone: NO in national parks
  • Safari lens: 100-400mm+
  • Migration: Jan-Feb, Jun-Jul
  • Golden hour: 6:00-6:30am/pm
  • Bush flights: 15kg soft bag
  • Dust: Extreme — cover gear
