Emergency Consular Services in India

The Tanzania High Commission in New Delhi provides emergency consular assistance to Tanzanian citizens in India facing urgent situations, including lost documents, arrests, medical emergencies, and repatriation.

Emergency Travel Documents

If your passport is lost, stolen, or damaged and you need to travel urgently, the High Commission can issue an Emergency Travel Document (ETD).

Requirements:

  • FIR (First Information Report) from Indian police
  • Any copies of your lost passport
  • Two passport-sized photographs
  • Proof of Tanzanian citizenship
  • Travel booking or itinerary
  • Fee: approximately INR 5,000

File an FIR

Visit your nearest police station and file a First Information Report. Keep the FIR copy.

Contact the High Commission

Notify FRRO

If registered with FRRO, also notify them about the lost passport.

Apply for Replacement

Visit the High Commission with FIR, identity documents, and photos.

Arrest or Detention

If a Tanzanian citizen is arrested or detained in India:

  • Consular Visit: The High Commission can visit you in custody
  • Legal Help: Assist in finding a lawyer (advocate)
  • Family Notification: Contact your family in Tanzania
  • Fair Treatment: Ensure treatment according to Indian law
  • Translation: Help with language barriers
Under the Vienna Convention, you have the right to contact your High Commission. Ask the Indian police to notify the Tanzania High Commission.

Medical Emergencies

In a medical emergency, call 108 (ambulance) or 112 (unified emergency). The High Commission can:

  • Contact your family in Tanzania
  • Coordinate with hospitals
  • Assist with medical evacuation if needed
  • Help with financial transfers from family

The High Commission cannot pay for medical treatment. Comprehensive health insurance is strongly recommended.

Death of a Tanzanian Citizen in India

  • Obtaining the death certificate from Indian authorities
  • Notifying family in Tanzania
  • Arranging repatriation of remains to Tanzania (costs borne by family)
  • Assisting with local burial/cremation if preferred
  • Guidance on personal effects and legal matters

Student Emergencies

Tanzanian students in India who face emergencies should:

  • Contact their university's international student office first
  • Call the High Commission for consular assistance
  • Keep copies of passport, visa, and FRRO registration at all times
  • Register with the High Commission upon arrival in India
