Document Legalisation Process

To legalise a German document for use in Tanzania:

1
Notarisation

Have the document notarised by a German Notar (notary public).

2
Authentication (Uberbeglaubigung)

Get the notary's signature authenticated by the Landgericht (regional court) or Bundesverwaltungsamt.

3
Legalisation at the Embassy

Bring the authenticated document to the Tanzania Embassy for final legalisation, making it valid for use in Tanzania.

Note: Tanzania has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention, so the traditional legalisation route through the Embassy is required rather than an apostille.

Power of Attorney (Vollmacht)

Tanzanians in Germany who need someone in Tanzania to act on their behalf for property, business, or legal matters can execute a Power of Attorney at the Embassy.

Requirements:

  • Valid Tanzanian passport or national ID
  • German Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit)
  • Draft Vollmacht document (can be prepared at the Embassy)
  • Full details of the appointed person (Bevollmachtigter)
  • Personal appearance required for identity verification

A Power of Attorney executed at the Embassy is valid in Tanzania without additional legalisation. Having the document in both English and Swahili is recommended.
