Emergency Consular Services in Germany

The Tanzania Embassy in Berlin provides emergency consular assistance to Tanzanian citizens in Germany facing urgent situations including lost documents, arrests, medical emergencies, and repatriation.

Emergency Travel Documents

If your passport is lost, stolen, or damaged and you need to travel urgently, the Embassy can issue an Emergency Travel Document (ETD).

Requirements:

  • Police report (Anzeige) for lost or stolen passports
  • Any copies of your lost passport
  • Two biometric passport photos
  • Proof of Tanzanian citizenship
  • Travel booking or itinerary
  • Fee: approximately €60

Lost or Stolen Passport Procedure

File a Police Report (Anzeige)

Visit your nearest police station (Polizeidienststelle) or report online where available. Keep the Anzeige confirmation.

Contact the Embassy

Notify the Auslanderbehorde

If you hold a German residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel), also notify your local foreigners' registration office.

Apply for Replacement

Visit the Embassy with your Anzeige, identity documents, and photos to apply for an ETD or replacement passport.

Arrest or Detention Assistance

If a Tanzanian citizen is arrested or detained in Germany, the Embassy can provide:

  • Consular Visit: A consular officer can visit you in custody (Untersuchungshaft or Abschiebungshaft)
  • Legal Help: Assist in finding a Rechtsanwalt (lawyer); legal fees are your responsibility
  • Family Notification: Contact your family in Tanzania or Germany
  • Fair Treatment: Ensure you are treated in accordance with German law and international standards
  • Translation: Assist with communication barriers between Swahili/English and German
Under the Vienna Convention, you have the right to contact your embassy. Tell the German authorities (Polizei) to notify the Tanzania Embassy on your behalf.

Medical Emergencies

In a medical emergency in Germany, call 112 (Notruf / Rettungsdienst) immediately. The Tanzania Embassy can then assist with:

  • Contacting your family in Tanzania
  • Coordinating with German hospitals (Krankenhaus)
  • Helping arrange medical evacuation to Tanzania if necessary
  • Facilitating financial transfers from family

Germany has excellent emergency medical care. All residents with health insurance (Krankenversicherung) are covered. Uninsured Tanzanian citizens should contact the Embassy for guidance on costs.

Death of a Tanzanian Citizen in Germany

In the event of a death, the Embassy assists the family with:

  • Obtaining the death certificate (Sterbeurkunde) from the Standesamt
  • Notifying family in Tanzania
  • Arranging repatriation of remains (Uberfuhrung) to Tanzania - costs borne by the family
  • Assisting with local burial in Germany if preferred
  • Guidance on inheritance and personal effects (Nachlassangelegenheiten)

Victim of Crime

If you are a victim of crime in Germany:

  1. Call 110 (Polizei) to report the crime
  2. Seek medical attention if injured - call 112
  3. Contact the Tanzania Embassy for consular support
  4. The Embassy can help you find victim support services (Opferhilfe) and legal assistance
