Travelling with National ID

For travel to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi, Tanzanian citizens can use their National ID card (Kitambulisho cha Taifa) instead of a passport at designated border posts. This includes:

  • Land border crossings (e.g., Namanga, Sirari, Mutukula)
  • Some air travel between EAC states (check with airline)

A passport is still recommended for the most hassle-free travel experience.

Working in EAC Countries

While visa-free travel is available, working in another EAC country still requires a work permit. The EAC Common Market Protocol provides for free movement of workers, but implementation varies by country. Check requirements with the destination country's immigration authority.

FAQ
