Tanzania Dual Citizenship Policy
Tanzania does not recognize dual citizenship for adults. Acquiring citizenship of another country automatically results in the loss of Tanzanian citizenship. Here is everything you need to know.
The Law
Under the Tanzania Citizenship Act (1995) and the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania:
- A Tanzanian citizen who acquires citizenship of another country ceases to be a Tanzanian citizen
- A foreign national who becomes a Tanzanian citizen must renounce their previous nationality
- There is no provision for holding two citizenships simultaneously as an adult
Tanzania is one of a small number of African countries that fully restricts dual citizenship.
Exception: Children
There is one notable exception to the dual citizenship prohibition:
- Children born abroad who acquire both Tanzanian citizenship (through parentage) and the citizenship of the country of birth can hold both citizenships until age 21
- At age 21, the individual must choose one citizenship
- If they do not actively choose, Tanzanian citizenship is automatically revoked
This exception only applies to citizenship acquired at birth, not through later naturalization.
Proposed Diaspora Special Status
In November 2024, the Tanzanian government proposed amendments to introduce a "special status" for former Tanzanian citizens living abroad. If approved, this would grant:
- Visa-free entry to Tanzania
- Right to own property in Tanzania
- Right to engage in economic activities in Tanzania
- Special status for spouse and children
This is not the same as dual citizenship. It is a compromise allowing former citizens to maintain ties with Tanzania without full citizenship rights (such as voting).
Regaining Tanzanian Citizenship
If you have lost Tanzanian citizenship by acquiring another nationality, you may be able to regain it through:
- Renouncing your foreign citizenship
- Applying for restoration of Tanzanian citizenship at the Ministry of Home Affairs
- Meeting residency requirements if applicable
The process and requirements vary. Contact the nearest Tanzania embassy for guidance.
