Document Legalisation Process

To legalise a Canadian document for use in Tanzania, follow this three-step process:

1
Notarisation

Have the document notarised by a licensed Canadian notary public or commissioner of oaths.

2
Authentication by Global Affairs Canada

Submit the notarised document to Global Affairs Canada for authentication. This confirms the notary's credentials.

3
Legalisation at the High Commission

Bring the authenticated document to the Tanzania High Commission for final legalisation. This step ensures the document is accepted by authorities in Tanzania.

Power of Attorney

Tanzanian citizens in Canada who need to authorise someone in Tanzania to act on their behalf (e.g., for property transactions, business matters, or legal proceedings) can execute a Power of Attorney at the High Commission.

Requirements:

  • Valid Tanzanian passport or national ID
  • Draft Power of Attorney document (can be prepared at the High Commission)
  • Full details of the person being appointed as attorney
  • Description of the powers being granted
  • Two witnesses (can be provided by the High Commission if needed)
  • You must appear in person for identity verification
Note: A Power of Attorney executed at the High Commission is valid in Tanzania without additional legalisation. It is recommended to have the document prepared in both English and Swahili if it will be used in Tanzanian courts.
